Make provision for a national public holiday on 23 June or the subsequent weekday when 23 June falls at a weekend; and for connected purposes.

Be it enacted by the Queen’s most Excellent Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Lords Spiritual and Temporal, and Commons, in this present Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:—

1 Amendment of the Banking and Financial Dealings Act 1971

(1) Schedule 1 (Bank Holidays) to the Banking and Financial Dealings Act 1971 is amended as follows.

(2) In paragraph 1 (bank holidays in England and Wales), after “The last Monday in August”, insert “23rd June, if it is not a Saturday or Sunday or, if it is a Saturday or Sunday, the first Monday following that day.”

(3) In paragraph 2 (bank holidays in Scotland), after “The first Monday in May”, insert “23rd June, if it is not a Saturday or Sunday or, if it is a Saturday or Sunday, the first Monday following that day.”

(4) In paragraph 3 (bank holidays in Northern Ireland), after “The last Monday in May”, insert “23rd June, if it is not a Saturday or Sunday or, if it is a Saturday or Sunday, the first Monday following that day.”

2 Bank holiday to be referred to as “independence day”

(1) It shall be the duty of all public authorities in publications and communications in connection with the bank holiday established by the amendments to Schedule 1 to the Banking and Financial Dealings Act 1971 made by section 1 of this Act to refer to that bank holiday as “independence day”.

(2) In this section, “public authorities” has the same meaning as in section 3 of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (public authorities).

3 Financial provisions

The following are to be paid out of money provided by Parliament—

(a) any expenditure incurred under or by virtue of the Act by the Secretary of State, and

(b) any increases attributable to this Act in the sums payable under any other Act out of money so provided.

4 Extent, commencement and short title

(1) This Act extends to England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

(2) This Act shall come into force on the day on which it receives Royal Assent.

(3) This Act shall be cited as the June Bank Holiday (Creation) Act 2018.
